The Sound of Jura

The Sound of Jura is a strait off the west coast of Scotland. It is to the east of the island of Jura and to the west of Knapdale, part of a peninsula of the Argyll mainland. The north end is particularly treacherous, with strong tidal currents and whirlpools. The Gulf of Corryvreckan, which contains a notorious whirlpool, the world’s third largest, leads from the north of the Sound.

The Sound is home to some of the most fascinating and diverse marine life in Scotland. Part of it is a Marine Protected Area to protect the critically endangered Flapper Skate. Recently it became the UK’s first Mission Blue Hope Spot joining other Hope Spots such as the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos
